At this point we have the basic understanding of Natural Oils, the different types and their many benefits to natural hair care and growth. We know how powerful Essential Oils are. Let’s talk Carrier Oils.

Natural hair and Carrier Oils

A carrier oil is a vegetable oil derived from the fatty part of a plant, usually from the seeds, kernels or the nuts. We use them often in food preparation.

Carrier Oils are also known as base oils/fixed in aromatherapy. According to, the term carrier oil is derived from their purpose in carrying the essential oil onto the skin.

Carrier Oils for Natural Hair Care

A Carrier Oil is used to dilute essential oils to prevent irritations and sensitization that could arise from applying essential oil directly on the skin. They contain fatty acid, vitamins and nutrients that nourishes the skin and hair.

There are many to choose from. Select your oils according to the needs of your hair (hair type, porosity, density etc). High Porosity hair will need heavier oils than medium-low porosity hair for best results. Heavier Oils  seal the outer cuticle layer slowing down the process of evaporation and in essence keep more moisture.

It is very important to invest your first years in getting know your hair and how it works!! (I stress this in every post) See How to Return Natural in 2017.
