5 Top Afrocentric Jewelry brands for Wakandan Vibes

By Posted on 0 4 m read 356 views

Its Wakanda forever season again!!! At least for some of you I know it is, haha. I have a funny feeling Afrocentric vibes will be a huge hit this Halloween season. You might be one of the folks that wishes to have a try a hand at Nakia’s sultry looks, Or maybe bald headed Okoye warrior princess display of female power and strength, which ever the case we’ve got you here at Nappyese.

You see way before the Black Panther Franchise surfaced into our reality, #Nappystyle has been giving us African strength and royality from dawn of day. Most times, around the city then, I felt it was met with quick awkward side glances, wide eyed surprises or intrigue but the best reaction is always a smile of admiration and a compliment, followed by ‘where can I buy that?’ question.

I am always more than willing to share the not so secret hiding places of luxury afrocentric accessories, because I was once like these people. And if not for my healthy obsession with researching the net, curating styles via instagram, my career as a blogger, I too would have thought it a myth to be proudly African, let alone find unique and sexy afrocentric accessories that match with my soul. More especially in today’s modern day post-colonial African culture, with our generation seemingly eager to swap out our rich complex cultures for rat race uniforms of bland mediocrity and fitting into patriarchy standards of style. It continues to amuse me when the same generation cries culture appropriation. How can someone else appropriate a culture you claim as yours but hardly display until one costume day but you think you proudly claim it as yours? Where’s the genuinity in that?

Anyways I digress into muddy waters. Let’s save the politics for later, when our stomach are all full…lol

DO YOU HATE YOUR DRY SKIN? Here’s how to fight it, for cheap!

By Posted on 0 3 m read 300 views

Wagwan my boo,

Welcome back to the blog for some nappy skin care. I finally made the internal decision to be a sun chaser this year and furthermore. I can create the life I want therefore I’m choose to always be warm haha. Of course I love New York city’s pulsing energy but it’s not my habitat when the blustery snow comes. The cold gets depressing.

So I guess henceforth as well  I don’t need to worry about changing my skin care routine for the colder month 🙂 Perks!! I definitely do think the routine  below can be applied all year round on dry skin. The secret to great skin for m is to keep things simple. Of course sometimes re-enforcement is required sometimes on the battle field of skin care when stress comes to push. But for the most part I’ve found remaining balanced with my practices internally will show same results on the outside. So I will say focus more on what is going into your body

Here is my updated weekly skin care routine I used throughout the summer. Even though I have been trying lots of new skin care products recently, my skin care game fits in a palm. As you know I like to keep things au naturale as much as possible. These are drugstore products that have worked well for my skin and don’t cost a sweet fortune. Most of the products last a minimum 3-4 months, depending on how often you use it. I perform my weekly skin routine once a week to bi-weekely, and also depending on what is necessary for my skin in the moment

Mid-summer when my body lotion mix you’ll see in the video below and my Taliah Waajid natural hair products ran out, I comforted my skin with just coconut oil and raw shea butter, and my Mushu (natural hair) with Olive Oil (overnight pre-poo) , Nappyese Sesame seed oil+ Lavender essential oil for scalp massages. And they sufficed quite fine and fitted neatly into my moving housing budget and whatnot.

African Black soap is forever bae! It helped my reduce and tackle my stress inspired acne period. Felt so good to have it again that I got inspired and shared a blog post delving into its properties

I hope you enjoy the video, don’t forget to leave a comment. I want to know what your experience is with any of these products. All products used and mentioned are linked all over this content for easy shopping convenience. Don’t be shy to try them out and let me know how well they work for you if you have tried these products.

Hello Instagram my name is Ese. It’s 1:16am here in New York and I’ve been up all day since 6am yesterday. 😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵😵 I’m about to share more of my stories with the world. It’s scary and daunting but I need to do it because I desire to be to a responsible human. Responsible for making the world a better place by being brave joining in to speak about and ask questions about difficult things that affect me and I think everyone else in society_ some more than others ✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾✍🏾 I’ve always been a better writer more than I’ve been a speaker. I used to judge myself but now I know it’s ok to be great at one thing and not both. I’m a great speaker too but I’d rather say funny things so you laugh or I’ll smize and share a smile that’ll make your skip a mini beat. Most times I’ll be quiet and be in a corner cleaning or sumtin because we never get to a place where we are comfortable enough with each other to talk about how we can work together as humans to have a greater balance for all of us here on earth. 🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐🧐 But we have important business to address so I’ll start now with my words… 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 I am just young growing woman trying to understand the world around me and so far nothing makes sense. Rephrase- Nothing makes MY sense. I had an ex recently call me mental and hounded me to go see a shrink even while I didn’t have a roof over my head. That was abusive so I let that go. 🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕🤕 Life has had me literally estranged from my family for the past 5 years for in the name of survival. So I can’t talk to my parents and I don’t really have any grown adult to talk to that I think will listen and first understand me objectively without trying to brain-wash me into what they think I should think and do Anyways African parents never really talk to their kids anyways… So here I am about to spill my guts to total strangers on the internet, Yaaay millenials👋🏾 ✨💛✨💛✨💛✨💛✨💛 I’ve tried this many times before you see. But finally I have started to come to a place of peace and calm within myself where I can try to constructively string my words together to make some sort of sense. Are you ready?? It’s almost 2AM…. #IAMGIAIA #nappyese

#HAIRSPIRATION OF THE MONTH: Annabelle Lyttle

By Posted on 0 5 m read 463 views

Wagwan Nappyboos! Welcome back to the blog. Outchea on nappyese, we are all about being kinky. In the nappiest sense of the word lol. But I think our curly hair sisters also have something to say about hair! We caught up here with the stunning Annabelle Lyttle.

Hi Annabelle! Can we meet you?

Curly or straight, both are great 🙃

A post shared by Annabelle Lyttle (@annabelle_rl) on

Hi! I’m Annabelle. I was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Growing up, I split my time between PA and New Mexico from the ages 15-19, and completed a year of study at New Mexico State University for Theatre Arts. After my first year of college, I dropped out to pursue modeling in NYC. I finally moved to the city in 2011, and have lived here ever since. In my time here, I have been signed to multiple agencies, domestic and international, continued my study of acting and performance, and worked at various restaurants around Manhattan and Brooklyn. In my downtime, I love reading, baking, hanging out with my cat, and falling down internet rabbit holes.

I loved working with you on set! How long have you been a model and an actor?

It was so great working with you too! I have been a model for about 7 years professionally. I got started with it when I was about 14, but I start the clock around the time I moved to NYC. I have been acting since I was very young. I always did the school plays, I competed in theatre competitions, and won an Acting scholarship. I can’t say that I’ve begun my professional acting career yet, but it’s slowly coming along. I’m about to wrap my first indie film in a few weeks.

Do you have your beautiful curls straightened a lot at work? If so, do you get heat damage and how do you deal with it

Windswept. #redhead #hair #wind #beauty #makeup

A post shared by Annabelle Lyttle (@annabelle_rl) on

Ugh, yes. At one point, an agency I was signed with had advised me to ONLY wear my hair straight to castings. I can’t tell you how much time I wasted straightening my hair. I even did one of those at home, straightening perms. My hair was almost always straightened for shoots as well. Thankfully, my curls bounced back. I treat my ends with Moroccan Oil a couple times a month, and use shampoos and conditioners that don’t contain any parabens or sulfates.

Was it easy to transition into acting as a model?

My transition from modeling to acting is slowly starting to begin. Acting has kind of always been waiting in the wings for me, I just need to take the leap and commit to it. I’ll probably make the official segue within a year, and get back into an acting class and try to find representation.

Do you face any challenges as a curly hair model?

I think the main challenge is the assumption that curly hair is difficult to work with. I’ve gone to castings with my hair pulled back in a sleek bun, and then showed up to the job with my curly hair. I can always see the somewhat panicked look on the hair stylists face, or the client will make a comment like, “Oh, we didn’t know you had curly hair…” as if it was the biggest inconvenience in the world. I’m fortunate that my hair does straighten easily, so it hasn’t been too much of a hindrance. I do believe that there needs to be further education for hair stylists to know how to style all textures of hair.

Free Plane ticket to your desired destination. Where would you go?

It’s so cliche, but I would love to go to either Bali or Mykonos.

What are your goals with both careers?

My goals for modeling are to become the face of a makeup or skincare brand, and to do as many editorials as possible. My goals for acting are to play as many different types of characters that I can. I want to be versatile, and not locked into just one genre of film. Right now I’m focusing on indie films, but eventually I’d love to go out for feature films and possible TV shows or a Netflix Original.

Curly or straight?

Work that updo.

A post shared by Annabelle Lyttle (@annabelle_rl) on

Most times I’m strictly a curly girl, if I wear my hair down. I only ever wear it straight if I have to for work.

DIY or Products?

I’ve never tried any DIY hair hacks, so I only use products 🙂

Who are your Role Models?

My role models are Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep, and Mel Robbins.

Holy Grail Hair products?

DevaCurl Supercream is LIFE CHANGING!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years, I see myself working a job I love, either modeling or acting or some new pursuit. I see myself knowing and loving exactly who I am and what I stand for.

You have all the power in the entire Universe for one day. What would you change?

If I had all the power in the universe for one day, I would change peoples ability to listen. I see so much of just shouting our opinions at each other without actually taking the time to hear what anyone we disagree with is saying. I believe that in order to find a solution to a problem, we have to communicate, and hear each other out. It may not fix everything, but it will establish a common ground to build upon.
Thank you for chatting with us Annabelle. You are so stunning, I couldn’t stop looking through your instagram! You also have a lovely soul and personality. I wish you many successes in all you endeavors!
